Charlotte is one of the largest growing cities in the US but has been able to maintain a small town feel and atmosphere. In addition to being the largest city in North Carolina, geographically Charlotte is centrally positioned in the middle of the North and South Carolina, in an area referred to as the Carolinas. Located in the Piedmont Region of the Carolinas, Charlotte is 2 hours east of the Appalachian Mountains and 3 1/2 hours west of the Atlantic Ocean. New York City is 631 miles to the northeast and Atlanta is 256 miles to the southwest. Charlotte/Douglas airport is a busy international airport and a hub for US Airways.
